Books

Sometimes writing a 2,000 word blog post just isn’t quite enough for me, so I write an entire book! Or three! Or four!

Right now all of my published books are in the urban fantasy genre, but I have other books in the works that I’m really excited to see come to e-readers, so check back here for updates.

The Familiar Series (aka Demon Café)

My main series, currently going through a bit of a rebranding. The book covers are likely to change sometime soon, so why don’t you pick up the old-school covers while you still can? Enticing!

Fiercely independent Cassie Tremblay divides her time between working the cash register at her neighborhood coffee shop and studying to produce the grades to get into a top-tier university. Sam, a mysterious co-worker at The Daily Grind, seems to have taken an instant dislike to her, but for Cassie, the looming specter of the SAT Verbal section is a much bigger concern.

After a freak accident nearly leaves Cassie and her co-workers dead, a spell cast in desperation transforms her from a regular teen to a valuable familiar: a magical well a demon can tap. As if she didn’t have enough problems, now every demon (and their monstrous minions) seems to be after Cassie’s latent magic, and will stop at nothing to possess her.

Sam, now her “master” (loath as Cassie is to admit it) works to protect her, but she soon realizes the security bought by his barely controlled black magic comes at a terrible price. She would love nothing more than to earn her freedom for herself, but with no ability to cast spells of her own, how can she fight back?

It’s not easy being a teenaged witch. Or maybe it is? Cassie wouldn’t know, since she’s still a demon’s familiar.

Technically she should be a witch already, and with the next demon court date looming, it’s becoming a bigger problem every day. But who has time to meet the prereqs when there’s another familiar to snatch, snotty vampires in dinner jackets to sort out, and political schemes that threaten the whole world order to foil? And why does it seem like she and her “favorite” demon are competing to see who can make more powerful enemies before she can even cast her first spell?

In Succession of Witches, the second book in The Familiar Series, it’s time for Cassie to learn who she really is, among other things. However, considering the fact she’s drawn the attention of the biggest, baddest witch around, who she is might not be as big a revelation as who she’s up against.

Young love is tough as it is, but it’s even worse when the guy you have a crush on is technically your demonic master. Is there any way to move forward on the girlfriend/boyfriend path without things getting all creepy and weird? 17-year-old Cassie is kind of stuck on that, and it doesn’t help matters that her English teacher is on the warpath. Who knew that getting turned into a rat that one time would make the guy so testy?

As if she didn’t have enough to deal with back home, now the whole entourage has to go to Las Vegas for Sam’s blood status hearing, which will determine whether he’s officially too dangerous to live; apparently, demons don’t like it when other demons can stop the clock. Unfortunately, Sam isn’t the only one playing around with time, “playing” being the operative word.

They say that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but it’s possible that even the City of Sin may not be able to keep the lid on this one. Besides, whoever said “The House Always Wins” probably never had several hundred demons in the house….

The Penguin Series

My other series, a parody of urban fantasy featuring the world’s dumbest werepenguin. So far there’s only one book, but eventually I’ll have to come up with the dumbest possible thing a penguin-girl could do, then Penelope will have more adventures.

Badass bounty hunter Penelope Ripperson is tired of people going on and on about werewolves. What’s so great about wolves anyway? They’re just like dogs, only not as cute. In contrast, Pen’s pudgy bird form is both adorable and practical. Forget the lupine drama queens: Werepenguins are the new hotness in paranormal.

But now that mysterious police commissioner Clayton Crane has his eye on her, can Penelope keep her secret and protect the city from a new undead menace at the same time? More importantly, will she be able to make enough smart-mouth comments en route to prove how independent she is, even when she should just shut up and do her job?

Penguin of Fortune is a spine-tingling, pulse-pounding urban fantasy novella in the hot-female-bounty-hunter-with-magic-and-an-attitude genre, but also completely original because it has penguins in it, SO THERE.
