Otakusphere Weekly #8: How Dextrous

I had a cup of half-caff coffee before recording this show, which didn’t seem to have the effect on my brain that I was hoping for. Fortunately, no amount of any psychoactive drug would have made Big Order 5 go down smoothly anyway, so it ended up not mattering much one way or the other. Lifesong and I spent quite a while trying to figure out just what was going on in the wake of that episode, like two beaten, shipwrecked survivors clinging to a rock together after a hurricane.

In other news this week, we continue to be haunted by Re:Zero and the shadow of the Jealous Witch, the charm of Anne-Happy is intoxicating, The Lost Village is less of a train wreck and more of a slow, deliberate collision between two vehicles that happen to be trains, and Shonen Maid, of all things, makes us cry. Also, Space Patrol Luluco makes us wonder the eternal question, “Why did no one try setting them on fire before?”

Anime Rescue: Spring 2016

Four times a year, dozens of young, bright-eyed anime characters are set loose upon the world. As joyous as this miracle of nature is, sadly, every season many characters are deployed to the wrong shows, leading to much unnecessary stress and existential angst. For the cost of just one Cup Ramen per day, YOU can send an anime character to where they’ll truly thrive; away from the unappreciative jerks on their own shows.

Let’s learn more about this season’s crop of unfortunates, and what you–  no, what we ALL– can do to help. Continue reading Anime Rescue: Spring 2016

This week, Lifesong and I finally put our collective foot down and drop Bungo Stray Dogs for basically giving us a bad Sherlock episode, and without even that Cumberbatch fellow to save it by chewing up some scenery. At the same time, we struggle to understand just what the hell could even conceivably be going on in Big Order, lament the lack of proper world-building in Twin Star Exorcists, and get slightly mad at our favorite spy drama for giving us Murder On The Joker Game Express instead of a proper storyline. Also, LB now lives in fear of evil ocean hamsters unhinging their tiny jaws and decapitating Blue Mermaids, but I think the same can be said of all right-thinking people.

Now, even if you normally just stay for the heavy-hitter shows at the beginning, I recommend sticking it out all the way to Pan de Peace this week: you’ll get to hear Sal completely lose it over the fact that Melon Bread is a lying asshole of a bread, and it is a moment to savor.

Otakusphere Weekly #6: That’s Not Where Babies Come From

This week’s discussion is dominated by a certain Big Order plot-twist that will forever live in infamy…or at least until the summer anime season. Meanwhile, I seem to have some kind of mental block where I can’t remember which shows LB is watching, despite the fact that he’s been entirely consistent and his watchlist isn’t even that long. Fortunately, my ineptitude at podcast hosting is far outclassed by the ineptitude of the writing in both Super Lovers and Bungo Stray Dogs, meaning I can still feel more or less okay about myself. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that the writing in High School Fleet is inept just because the show is dumb; achieving THAT level of stupid has to be deliberate, and requires a certain level of raw talent.

In other news, we discover Lifesong’s primary talent in life, Joker Game is awesome just for acknowledging that Morse Code is cool, we worry about food sanitation in regard to Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou, and this is perhaps the third week in a row where Pan de Peace has not featured even one joke. Why are we still watching it? Why are we still watching half of this stuff? Why won’t Sakamoto marry me*? Listen and find out!

On the plus side, we are now at the point of the season where we remember maybe 10% of the characters’ names, which is an achievement to be proud of. On the minus, this was kind of a sucky week for anime, with a lot of shows treading water after their introductory arcs. Fortunately, Bakuon!! is here to save us with its tales of Jesus’ favorite motorcycle, and I discover that a cartoon I saw when I was practically a toddler was an anime, meaning I’ve been an anime fan for even longer than I thought.

In other news, someone on the show is investigating the massive, nubile world of cosplay boobs (not telling you who), we learn that rampaging school girls in ankle-length pleated skirts were once a real matter of public concern, High School Fleet fails to garner the Official Navy Seal of Approval,  and Sal has a friend of a friend who may be a Tonkatsu DJ…or maybe just a regular DJ? I’m just going to assume all DJ-ing involves fried delicacies now.
