Sketchblog: Riorla

Riorla 001

Killing some time at Starbucks today, I decided to draw Riorla, one of the characters from Dark Juice Box. I’m trying to stay away from detail work and just sketch, just get a feel for different ways of drawing the character.

Basically, what I’m trying to do is reinvent my style.

You'll notice her arms look super-derpy, but it was kind of intentional-- I'm trying to find a way to draw simplified, cartoony arms that don't look out of place. I'm not there yet.

I think there was always a lot of baggage involved with drawing for me…like I was trying to prove I was “good enough” at it. Good enough for what, I really couldn’t tell you. I often got so bogged down in superfluous details, trying so hard to make something that someone might call “professional,” I guess. Coming back to drawing now, I’m done caring whether I meet some arbitrary, imaginary standard: I just want to draw. I just want to draw characters and tell stories.

So I find myself asking some deceptively basic questions like “What kinds of things do I want to draw?”, and “What do I want my style to look like?” I’m trying to find a way of drawing that feels comfortable, that I can do relatively quickly without getting bogged down in details or other time-wasters, yet still feels like something I can be proud of. I hope to document some of that here in the coming weeks and months.
